Beaver Island has a modern 14,000 square foot Spartan store and two handy convenience stores. There are two gas stations, hardware, and building supply store, a spa, and many gift stores and recreational businesses. Restaurants range from family fast food to outstanding casual dining.

Beaver Island has a modern well equipped Rural Health Center staffed by two experienced Nurse Practitioners who have 24-hour access to emergency physicians on the mainland. Physicians visit monthly. Care is available 24/7. Beaver Island also has an outstanding Emergency Medical Service (EMS) and Fire Department. The EMS response time is faster than in most cities. In the case of serious illness or injury charter flights to the mainland are available including an Air Ambulance. In the worst-case weather scenario, the United States Coast Guard can send a helicopter from Traverse City. Excellent hospitals are located in CharlevoixPetoskey, and Traverse City.

Getting to Beaver Island

Getting to and from the island is part of the Beaver Island lifestyle. On a beautiful day, the two-hour Beaver Island Boat Company ferry ride across Lake Michigan between Charlevoix and the island feels like a Caribbean cruise. A plane ride with Island Airways or Fresh Air Aviation is a 10-minute hop with heavenly aerial views that, on a clear day, stretch to the Upper Peninsula. Our suggestion? Unless the round-trip rate is a deal-breaker, treat yourself to the boat one way and plane the other so you get the full, top-to-bottom Beaver Island experience.

The restaurant is adjacent to Donegal Danny’s Pub, named after an island blueblood named Danny O’Donnell who was said to enjoy a good meal, friends, and cold pints. Your breakfast, lunch, pizza, and to-go sandwich headquarters are Dalwhinnie Bakery & Deli next to McDonough’s Market where the bread is baked fresh every day and the sausage is house-made. For a unique experience head over to Whiskey Point Brewing Co., This nano-brewery and taproom will serve beer, wine, hard cider, and soft drinks all made at his establishment.
