What you should know about Maple City
Maple City is located in a region that is not governed by any local municipal corporation. It is located in Kasson Township in the heart of Leelanau County in the State of Michigan. Just as its name conveys, Maple city is nestled in a grove of majestic maple trees.

The countryside surrounding Maple City contains orchards, hills, farms, and lakes. Most of the original settlers of Maple City came to the area in 1862 because of the Homestead Act. The Homestead Act allowed any person to file for a ¼ section of free land, which is about 160 acres. If a homeowner had built a house on the piece of land, dug a borehole or well, plowed about 10 acres of the land, fenced a certain amount of the land, and lived there with their family, such land was given to the homestead owned by the government.

Even though one did not live on the land, they could still claim ownership of a ¼ section of the land through timber culture, which was otherwise known as a tree claim.

According to the Homestead Act of 1862, the timber culture required the homestead owner to plant 10 acres of timber and cultivate them successfully.

As a result of this, many people started settling in the region, and Maple City was founded in 1866. Originally, it was called Peg town because two individuals J.T Sturtevent and William Parks came together and built a large shoe peg factory. In 1875, the first post office was established in Peg town in March, and the people named it Maple, which led to the whole town eventually being called Maple City.

Today, the beautiful Maple City is located between Traverse City and Glen Arbor, south of the captivating Lime Lake.
