One of the top winter activities in Michigan is downhill skiing (also known as Alpine skiing).

Here are our recommendations for the greatest Northern Michigan ski resorts for skiing, snowboarding, and snow tubing this winter (Northwest Michigan - Lower Peninsula).

Michigan ski resorts typically open between the middle of November and the beginning of December. Many ski resorts close their doors at the end of March. Some Michigan ski resorts, however, are able to stay open into April thanks to deep bases of machine-made and natural snow.

Caberfae Peaks

In addition to Michigan's highest lift-serviced peaks, Caberfae Peaks Ski Resort has some of the state's largest vertical drops.

A total of 34 runs are available for skiers and riders of all skill levels to enjoy.

If you're looking for a quick and easy way to get to a Michigan ski resort, look no further.

In Ski Magazine, they were referred to as "Michigan's #1 Ski Value" and the "Alta of the Midwest" because of our exceptional terrain, a dedicated and friendly staff, a relaxed homespun atmosphere, and very affordable prices.

As a result, I'd like to share that news with you!

Crystal Mountain Resort

Crystal Mountain is a four-season resort and its fans enjoy it nearly equivalent to how the fans enjoy Steamboat Springs in Colorado and Deer Valley in Utah. It is one of the most popular Northern Michigan ski resorts with hotels.

There are 58 downhill slopes and a 375-foot vertical drop on the 102 acres of skiable terrain. You can enjoy various activities and amenities even if you don't ski or snowboard:

  • Spa with a lot of awards
  • Swimming pool (indoors)
  • Snowmobiling, snowshoeing, and fat-tire biking are all popular winter activities.
  • In Michigan, this is the only Alpine slide.
  • Skating on the ice
  • Laser tag in the open air
  • Horseback riding and carriage rides are available.

Mount Holiday

Mt. Holiday, which first opened its doors in 1949, is one of the few Michigan ski slopes for families that is run entirely by volunteers. Outdoor recreational and instructional activities are available all year.

During the winter, you can ski or snowboard on any of the 16 different runs, which range in difficulty. Snow tubing and zip lining are also available.

Shanty Creek Resort

Shanty Creek Resort is one of the best Michigan resorts for families, with downhill and cross-country skiing and snowboarding. It is actually made up of three communities spanning 5,000 acres: Cedar River, Summit Mountain, and Schuss Mountain.

The two mountain ski slopes have 53 lines, 19 of which are beginner-friendly green tracks. The resort also offers snowshoeing, snowmobiling, fat tire biking, Alpine tubing, and dog sledding in addition to Nordic skiing.

Treetops Resort

Treetops Resort is open for around four months and has more than 30 winter activities and events, with an annual average of 136 inches of snowfall.

Downhill skiing, snowboarding, snowmobiling, cross-country skiing, and snowshoeing are among the family-friendly activities available.

Extreme tubing has a 400-foot run and an 80-foot vertical drop, making it a one-of-a-kind tubing experience.

Sunrise groomer rides, dog sledding, sleigh rides, and a scavenger hunt are all available at the resort.

Boyne Mountain and Boyne Highlands Resorts

Boyne Highlands Resort is the best ski resort for novices in Michigan, as well as the largest ski resort in the state.

In reality, it is one of the top Michigan ski resorts for families, with more than 432 acres, 53 runs, eight lifts, and three terrain parks, including 20 easy green routes.

Boyne Highlands also offers zip-lining, spa treatments, an indoor pool and sauna, sledding, and horseback riding in addition to cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, fat tire biking, and snowmobiling.

Boyne Mountain Resort knows how to have a good time in the snow. There are 60 runs and a variety of skiing, snowboarding, snow tubing, ice skating, and other sports despite the fact that it has fewer acres of skiable terrain.

It stands apart from the other Northern Michigan ski resorts because it has the state's largest indoor water park (Avalanche Bay).

Northern Michigan Ski Trivia

What if I told you that Michigan has more than 40 ski resorts, which is the second-highest number in the country after New York, would you believe me? Well, it's true. Michigan ski resorts have over 1,000 slopes, 250 lifts, and 50 terrain parks, giving the top ten ski resorts in the world a run for their money. However, while I'll admit to being born and now living in Northern Michigan, I am trying hard not to be biased.
