Mount McSauba Ski Homes Homes for Sale

The "Best Little Ski Hill in Michigan" is Mt. McSauba.

The City of Charlevoix owns and operates Mt. McSauba. Although Mt. McSauba is a day-use resort, many guests remain in adjacent hotels, rental properties, or second homes. The bulk of users are Charlevoix County citizens. Weekends and holiday periods are the most popular times for out-of-town visitors. Mt. McSauba now has four tow ropes that provide access to six groomed runs as well as several smaller un-groomed trail runs.

There are approximately 2 miles of groomed cross country ski routes in the region, as well as 80 acres for snowshoeing and hiking. A central day lodge, rental shop, maintenance garage, and parking lots are among the support amenities. Throughout the week, there is a mix of day and night skiing.

Short runs with steep slopes can be found on Mt. McSauba. McSauba offers beginner, intermediate, and advanced ski and snowboard lessons. Mt. McSauba features a large terrain park that accommodates to all skill levels. Mt. McSauba is all about kids and families having a great time while participating in winter sports.

There are no lodging options within the Mt. McSauba recreational area, however, the complex is located in downtown Charlevoix.   As a result, we curated a search within a few miles of Mt. McSauba if your searching for ski lifestyle-type properties - likely with younger children.

Mount McSauba Ski Community Highlights

The Mt. McSauba Recreation Area, named after a local Indian chief, dates back to 1956 when ten fathers approached municipal officials about creating a ski club to offer their children something to do during the winter. The city gave a steep dune on the north side of town, the fathers each put $100 into a kitty to buy equipment, and locals threw dirt that summer to make their new ski slope taller. Someone backed up a Ford Model T, deflated a rear tire, tied a tow rope from it, and dragged the first skiers up the slopes when the first snow fell. Since then, they've been skiing at Mt. McSauba, making it one of the state's oldest downhill zones.

"Little Nub's Nob," as the locals call it, is the name of the community hill. The Harbor Springs ski resort, which is one of the most popular in the Lower Peninsula, has taken Mt. McSauba under its wing, supplying the city of Charlevoix with a groomer and snowmaking equipment at no cost.

The city-owned Charlevoix Mt. McSauba Recreational Area ski slope has been named one of the greatest little ski resorts in the United States by Ski Magazine. The region includes ten lines served by four tow ropes for skiing and snowboarding, as well as a sledding hill, snowshoe and cross-country paths, and a skating rink, making it one of the most affordable ski facilities in the state. The ski hills have been outfitted with snowmaking equipment, allowing them to remain open despite the recent mild weather.

The majority of Mt. McSauba's six runs are located in front of the day lodge, although Tornado Alley is located on the backside and is named after the wind that blows off Lake Michigan. You can get a panoramic view of the lake and the frozen shoreline from the top of the Alley, and then take on Mt. McSauba's largest run, a 1,100-foot-long intermediate slope with a 150-foot vertical drop.

Trails link to Lake Michigan and are moderately paced. This lovely trail system also includes an 18-hole disc golf course with changing holes and amazing views. Climb to the top of the sand dunes in the Mt. McSauba Recreation Area for a breathtaking sunset. There is a 0.7-mile loop to explore on this trail system.

Mt. McSauba is a full winter recreation area, not just a ski slope. On the south side, there's a skating rink with a warming lodge, a lighted sledding hill on the north side, and a cross-country ski track behind the tall dune.
