Walloon Lake Country Club Community Highlights

WLCC began with 18 holes in 1904, more than a century ago. During the Great Depression, they lost nine holes and rebuilt nine new ones in 1990. God created the first nine without the use of bulldozers or backhoes. Each mound, hill, and tree is unique. The classic nine holes are mixed with the new nine holes. Greens have a reputation for being quick. On each hole, there are five tees. The variety will appeal to all players.

Tom Watson spent his childhood summers on Walloon Lake with his family. On a daily basis, Tom Watson played golf at the Club. He is a frequent visitor to the Club. His early involvement with the Club resulted in the establishment of The Watson Cup, an invitational golf competition. "I have toured the world playing golf on several fantastic golf courses," Tom says proudly of the Watson Tournament. "The fantastic years of growing up and playing golf at Walloon Lake Country Club will always hold a special place in my heart."

Four clay tennis courts on the lake's edge provide a picturesque setting for a casual game of tennis. Throughout the summer, a variety of programs are available that allow a novice to advanced players to play with like-ability opponents, including Men's, Ladies', Youth, Cardio, Round Robins, and Special Events. To learn skills and practice with the staff and tennis professionals, private and group sessions are provided.

Walloon Lake Country Club History

Early records of the Country Club's founding are hazy at best, but later documentation affirms 1904 as the year of formation. In the summer of 1904, the Club conducted its first organizational meeting at the Indian Garden Hotel. Llewellen Gedge, C.R. Talbot, and Julius Dick were the first officers. The clubhouse was built on Homer Bennett's farmland the following spring. The initial President was Mr. Gedge, and the first groundskeeper was Harold Wheaton. Every day, he would swim his horses over the North Arm narrows and return to maintain the golf course.

A second structure to the north housed the kitchen, dining room, and a few sleeping chambers. The Club used to own a 60-foot launch and had two docks available for its members to use. 72 more acres were obtained between 1923 and 1924, and the golf course was enlarged to 18 holes in 1925. At 5,960 yards, the course was a par 68 (35-33).Thursday night meals were popular social gatherings at the time, and ladies from all over the lake assisted with decorations and cooking. Square dances, an annual treasure hunt, and a popular corn roast with games singing, and bingo was all part of the festivities. Talented members put on vaudeville performances. Kerosene lighting was placed on both sides of the narrows on nights when there was a dance or other late-night event to lead the boats safely home. Long dresses and elaborate hats were worn by the women who attended the dinner parties and dances.During WWII, funds became a challenge. The Club sold nine holes, largely around the lake, in the early 1940s, as well as the property, which included the dining hall building, which was later demolished. To raise even more money, the contents were auctioned off. The course was reopened for play in 1947, with nine holes and makeshift greens. The following year, permanent greens were ready. Members used to play on this 9-hole course until 1990.

After voting on expansion the previous August, WLCC members approved the course's expansion to 18 holes in April 1989. On August 22, 1990, the new 18-hole golf course debuted for play. The new holes are designated as 3, 4, 5, and 12 through 17 today.

The Club now has 275 members, 18 superb golf courses, a new clubhouse, a gorgeous new pro shop that opened in 2009, four tennis courts that overlook Walloon Lake, and golf and tennis pros who offer instruction and clinics for adults and children. For young children, there is also a highly active youth program that includes swimming and a sailing program that is supported by the Club.

Dinner is served Monday, Wednesday, and Friday evenings, and boxed lunches are offered upon request. Throughout the summer, there will be a variety of unique events and parties. The club office can help you plan a private party.

The Walloon Lake Country Club is a place where summer activities, good times, and good friendships are nurtured. What a blessing it is to have all of this on Walloon Lake.
