Shanty Creek Resort Golf Community Highlights

Shanty Creek is a safer bet than your approach shot on #7 of Arnold Palmer's Michigan masterpiece, The Legend, with a silver award from Golf Digest, distinction from Condé Nast Traveler ("Top Golf Resorts in the World"), and two courses named among Michigan's Top 20 Public Courses by Golf Magazine.

With the addition of the Hawk's Eye, Shanty Creek now boasts one of the largest golf resorts in North America, with 90 holes on five courses in one location... diversity, beauty, and top-notch course conditions at every turn.

Five Championship Courses

  • Cedar River Golf Club, Designed by Tom Weiskopf, Opened 1999. Golf Week named it one of "America's Top 100 Resort Courses" and Rolex named it one of the "Top 1,000 Courses in the World." According to Golf Magazine, Cedar River is one of Michigan's Top 20 Public Courses, alongside The Legend.

  • The Legend Golf Club, Designed by Arnold Palmer, Opened 1986 .  Multiple elevation variations, doglegs, water dangers, and well-placed traps have all contributed to the Legend's reputation. Views of Lake Bellaire may be seen from the course, and the true Shanty Creek runs through it. Northern Michigan golf was introduced to the globe by Arnold Palmer, who named it one of the "Top Resort Courses" in the United States in Golf Magazine. Golf Digest gave it 4 1/2 stars.

  • Hawk’s Eye Golf Club, Designed by John Robinson, Opened 2004. This John Robinson design, which adds to Shanty Creek's golf reputation, has stunning vistas, water hazards on 9 of the 18 holes, and putting greens that will challenge players of all levels. GolfAdvisor named it one of "Michigan's Top Courses" and one of the "Top 25 Course Layouts in the United States."

  • Schuss Mountain Golf Club, Designed by Warner Bowen, Opened 1972. Even the most accomplished golfers will find Schuss Mtn to be a challenge. Throughout 7,013 yards of pine-studded forests, ponds, and rolling hills, Par eludes many. The initial nine holes play like two separate 9-hole courses, with the front doglegging through pine woodlands on a level pitch. Then, on the back nine, play leaps up and down Antrim County's undulating hills, providing an overall exhilarating golf experience made even better by our crew's meticulous attention to course conditions.

  • Summit Golf Club Designed by William Diddel, Opened in 1965. A Par Three tee box on each hole provides a fun (and less daunting!) option for junior golfers to improve their skills.

Golf Academy

Shanty Creek's Golf Academy team of PGA Professionals will identify "opportunities" in your swing and demonstrate effective techniques, as well as practice tips, for improving all aspects of your game, including distance, accuracy, approach shots, hazard saves, chipping, and putting, for players of all levels.

Dan McGinnis' Golf Academy at Cedar River GC may help you perfect your swing.

While each player's golf swing is unique, it should be as basic as feasible. Each lesson is tailored to each golfer's specific needs, focusing on the five basic positions that make up a solid golf swing.

  1. Set up
  2. Backswing
  3. Forward swing
  4. Impact
  5. Finish
Golf Tips

Here are a few pointers from Golf Week's Sam Ashe-Edmunds that could help you win your next match by a few strokes.

  • Don’t Stand Too Close. The slice is one of the most common golf difficulties. For right-handed golfers, the slice is sidespin on the ball that causes it to go from left to right. When the club travels from outside to inside the shoulders, glancing the ball from right to left, this happens frequently. An outside-in swing path is created by standing too close to the ball. Practice swinging the club straight through while standing in various positions in respect to the ball until you can eliminate your slice. Continue to move away from the ball until you form an inside-out swing path that causes the ball to hook to the left. Move forward to the last moment where you were hitting the ball straight after you've reached this stage.

  • 1-2 Putt. During a putt, many golfers chop at the ball, halting at contact rather than swinging through and past the ball. The ball will either stop short of the hole or veer off to one side of the cup as a result of this. When putting, adopt a 1-2 rhythm or tempo to maintain a constant swing path that will send your putt to the hole. Practice numerous swings before your putt with a follow-through that is the same length as your backswing to achieve this speed. Instead of merely making a greater backswing, the farther you are from the hole, you will use an equal amount of backswing and follow-through. This pendulum-like action will produce a smooth swing that will assist you in generating the proper distance and directional control.

  • Shift Your Weight, Forward. Many golfers hold the club with a death grip and swing so hard with their arms that they fall backward as they swing in order to hit the ball "harder."
On a long shot, you must move your weight from your back leg to your front leg to make the proper swing. Use a "flamingo swing" to practice shifting your weight to your front leg by lifting your rear foot off the ground and standing solely on your front foot. To obtain a feel for this weight transfer, practice this swing without a ball several times at a moderate speed. After you've practiced this a few times, repeat the swing, this time keeping your back foot on the ground. In a Golf Digest article, LPGA professional golfer Grace Park advocates shifting your weight forward far enough so that the heel of your rear foot comes off the ground and your toes point downward.
