Beverage carts are available on all three of our courses, as well as The Afternine, a turn-stand/halfway house on The Bear that sells sandwiches, beverages, and snacks.

  • THE GRILLE RESTAURANT. The Grille Restaurant, which is open throughout the golf season, is a wonderfully unique venue to have lunch or dinner during the summer. Enjoy the classic clubhouse ambiance and huge bar inside, or sit outside on the terrace and enjoy sweeping views of The Bear #18 hole with every bite. Our expert culinary team has prepared lunch and dinner menus that include a wide variety of club favorites.

The Grille is a must-visit during your summer stay at Grand Traverse Resort and Spa, with everything from steaming homemade soups, crisp salads, and appetizers—including house-made potato chips tossed in melted blue cheese and garden chives—to hearty sandwiches, wraps, pasta, tenderloin, chicken, and signature grilled burgers.

  • PRO SHOP. Our large Pro Shop is located within the golf Clubhouse, a short walk from the Hotel, Tower, and Grand Lobby, and is open during the golf season. Our Pro Shop carries top-of-the-line golf clothing for men and women, as well as other golf-related items. Vineyard Vines, Peter Millar, Turtleson, TravisMathew, Straight Down, Under Armour, Nike, Adidas, Footjoy, Greg Norman, Bermuda Sands, and Golftini are among the most popular brands.

  • PUTTER'S SNACK STOP. Putter's, located near the Clubhouse, is a great location to stop for a snack or a breakfast sandwich before hitting the course. A selection of hot and cold beverages, as well as a variety of snack items, are available for purchase.

  • GOLF ATTIRE. On all courses, proper golf clothing is needed. Shorts, slacks, and collared shirts are acceptable attire. T-shirts, denim, and cut-off shorts are not permitted.

THE BEAR

Welcome to The Bear, which is still as wild as it was when Jack Nicklaus initially opened it on June 17, 1985.

The Bear is regarded as one of Michigan's most difficult 18 holes, and according to Golf Digest, it is the 18th toughest course in the country. This lovely course represents the best of Traverse City golf and is consistently rated as one of Michigan's best.

Scottish terraced fairways, tiered greens, vast grassy roughs, moguls and mounds, and deep pot bunkers are all part of Nicklaus' distinctive design. The Bear has a range of varied aspects golfers rarely see on one course, including rolling ground, trees, lakes, streams, fruit orchards, and a diversity of wildlife. This is top-notch golf in northern Michigan.

PROUD TO CARRY THE NAME
The Bear's moniker is a nod to its inventor, Jack Nicklaus, who was known as "the Golden Bear" because of his signature golden hair. Jack Nicklaus, who was born in 1940, is a legend in the golf world, both as a player and as a course designer. His athletic career spanned five decades and included 18 major championship titles at the professional level. He is the only player in history to win all four major tournaments at least three times, and he is the only player to accomplish the career "Grand Slam" on both the regular and senior tours.

THE WOLVERINE

The first Gary Player trademark course in Michigan is designed to take full use of the Resort's immensely diversified landscape. With four sets of tees, the course's flexibility, variety, and playability allow it to be built up to accommodate players of all abilities.

The course is difficult for low handicappers yet playable and fun for high handicappers, and it may be put up as a true challenge for professional competitions.

Each of the nine is unique. The front nine is built on lowland terrain with water and wetlands, with existing wetlands upgraded to interweave with numerous holes. The back nine features hardwoods, rolling hills, and vistas of East Grand Traverse Bay, and is built on the highland ground.

The rough was seeded with bluegrass and fescue, and the fairways and greens were seeded with Providence Bentgrass. The tees were seeded with Penncross Bentgrass. Water comes into play on 13 holes, and the greens are undulating. Bryan Stuard of Jackson, Michigan set the course record with a 63 in the first round of the 2008 Michigan Open.

SPRUCE RUN

Spruce Run began as a nine-hole Acme Public Golf Course and was expanded to 18 holes in the 1970s, making it the Resort's first resort course. In 1979, former University of Michigan golf coach William Newcomb renovated the course as a 6,741-yard par-72 course and dubbed it The Resort Course.

Spruce Run was given that name in 1992 to honor the abundant spruce and fir trees that flank the fairways and greens. During the building of The Wolverine, Spruce Run was converted to a par-70 course.

Spruce Run is a more forgiving course than The Bear, but it still has some of the hard characteristics that made it famous as the site of the Michigan Open. The course makes its way through the undulating hills that surround the hotel and provide a beautiful view of Grand Traverse Bay.

Water comes into play on 13 holes, and bentgrass was used to seed the tees, greens, and fairways. From 1981 to 1984, the Michigan Open was held at Spruce Run. In 2017, the yardage, rating, and slope were all modified.

GOLF ACADEMY

TRAVERSE CITY INDOOR GOLF

Our 2,000-square-foot Golf Academy is open all year and features three heated indoor-outdoor hitting bays with mirrors and motion-capture technology for swing analysis. The Academy acts as our Winter Golf Center during the winter months, offering instruction, SuperSpeed golf training, practice sessions, and golf simulator play. The Dave Pelz Scoring Game School and the Grand Traverse Resort and Spa PGA professionals are two excellent options for golf instruction at Grand Traverse Resort and Spa.
