Golf
At the heart of the Birchwood, the community is 27 breathtaking holes of true northern Michigan golf. Golfers find themselves surrounded by untouched forest and gorgeous views of Lake Michigan while playing on fairways and greens that can only be described as "meticulous". Golf is the heartbeat of the Club. The summer months are filled with weekly events, clinics, member-member, and member-guest tournaments, along with many opportunities for our younger guests to learn the fundamentals and etiquette of the game of golf.
The original 18-hole layout winds through scenic woodlands and is a true test to even the most seasoned of golfers. With manicured fairways and generous greens, every round on this course is a new challenge. Playing to 6,734 yards, this layout is a perfect test for the scratch player while still an enjoyable training ground for those just taking up the game. An additional nine exceptional holes were added on the west side of the property in 1998. Crafted by renowned designer Jerry Mathews, this masterpiece shows his attention to detail and ability to utilize the terrain's natural topography. From the stunning views of Lake Michigan, beginning with the very first hole to the many elevated tee boxes, this is a truly impressionable course. Offering a more modern design, members of Birchwood delight in their endless golfing opportunities.
The practice areas and training center at Birchwood are also as outstanding as any in the U.S., groomed to perfection. The driving range facility is the optimum place to hone your game. Located nearby is a short game practice center where you'll find two large greens, sand bunkers and rough. The availability of lessons from an outstanding staff of Golf Professionals also provides all the tools needed to achieve mastery of the game of golf.
Weekly men's and ladies' golf, member-guest events, couples golf events, and junior golf events give our members a myriad of opportunities to fine-tune their golf game or to relax and socialize with friends on the course.
The Farms Course at Birchwood is used as an Executive Course (Par 32). This course is an excellent choice for beginners, novices, juniors, and families. Regular golf play will not take place on the Executive Course during the allotted hours. Par and yardages are from the Silver Tees except on holes 2 and 8, which will be converted to par 3's from 100 yards. Tee markers will be set up at that distance.
Racquet Sports
Birchwood's tennis facilities are among the finest in the state, offering 10-Har-Tru Clay Courts. The tennis program, complete with ball machines and a full-service Pro Shop, will meet all your individual or family tennis needs. Adult group and private instruction, as well as a full schedule of open mixers, run by a professional staff and a USPTA professional director, are offered. The junior program is large and offers classes for ages 4 through 18 at all levels and includes inter Club play, as well as a variety of special events. The adult program features a mix of tournaments, mixers, and social events, with all Members and guests welcome.
Birchwood also offers a pickleball program, that includes open play, clinics, leagues, and private lessons. This is a wonderful family sport that grandparents, parents, children, and grandchildren call enjoy together. A few pieces of basic pickleball equipment is all that is needed to begin play. Pickleball paddles are smaller than a tennis racquet but larger than a table-tennis paddle. Today’s paddles are made from several materials including wood, graphite, and aluminum. Similar to Wiffle balls, pickleball is lightweight with holes.
Pickleball is played on a smaller version of a tennis court that measures 20 feet wide and 44 feet long. The net is 36 inches high on the ends and 34 inches high in the middle. Both singles and doubles are played within these dimensions. The court has left and right service zones, as well as a 7-foot non-volley zone in front of the net known as the “kitchen.” Tennis apparel is a natural choice for the pickleball court.
Dining & Social
In Birchwood's Grill Room, Members and their guests can watch white-tailed deer cross the golf course, while you dine near the warmth of the 40-foot fieldstone fireplace. On any given night, Members will enjoy some of northern Michigan's finest cuisine with new friends, old friends, and welcoming neighbors. The mission is to "Exceed Our Member's Expectations Every Day." Your dining experience will enhance the enjoyment of being at your northern Michigan home, which simply cannot be equaled anywhere else in the country. The Casual Bar offers everything you look for in northern Michigan ambiance. Take pleasure in watching your favorite sporting event on one of several high definition televisions, while sipping from a frosty pint of one of the various draft beer selections offered. You can also enjoy our seasonal pub-style menus in the beautiful bar or on the outside terrace overlooking the 9th hole of the Farms Course.
The newly renovated Three - Way House is the perfect stop for a quick snack in between golf holes or tennis matches. The menu is full of hot and cold items, light snacks, and other refreshments, and is open throughout the summer season. This outside dining option offers relaxed seating that is perfect for our golfers, tennis players, and pool loungers as it is centrally located to the outdoor pool, racquet sports courts, and all three of our nine-hole golf courses.
In addition, the large dining room provides a beautiful setting and picturesque views for your special event; ideal for weddings, receptions, birthdays, anniversaries, or other private parties.
Pool
Experience the comforts of heated swimming pools, designed to meet the needs of all ages. Enjoy lap swimming, water fitness, and volleyball. The kiddie pool is offered for the fun and enjoyment of your younger members and guests. Swimming lessons are available with Red Cross Safety instructors, who are on guard duty daily during the summer. If swimming is not your style, enjoy the sun on spacious pool decks with a variety of chairs, umbrellas, and tables. For your refreshment and food enjoyment, the Three-Way House (snack shack) is located at the north end of the pool and the locker rooms are easily accessible with showers and vanities. Limited towels (you are welcome to bring your own) are available for day use at the pool.
Wellness & Fitness
The state-of-the-art fitness facility offers top-quality equipment in a great environment. Birchwood also offers many other wellness and fitness programs, including picturesque walking/hiking trails, along with many fun snowshoeing opportunities and cross country skiing throughout the winter season.
The Fitness Center is equipped with both cardio and strength training machines. For convenience, dedicated televisions are located with each piece of aerobic equipment. All strength training machines are individual stations, along with a large variety of free weights, offering a complete strength workout. The Fitness Center is open to members year-round, seven days a week from 6:00 am-10:00 pm.
There are a variety of wide cross country ski trails and terrain for every ability, from a leisurely ski through the trees on our gold or blue trails to a true "workout" on the south loop. There are also snowshoe trails available for use. Cross Country Ski & Snowshoe Trails are open to the public! The views are wonderful and the terrain unsurpassed. A total of 8.5 kilometers are groomed (by The Outfitter of Harbor Springs) for cross country skiing.
Bocce is a game that can be played by almost anyone. It requires no training, very little physical activity, and involves just a few minutes of instruction. At the same time, it can be competitive as well as a lot of fun. It also can bring together groups and individuals in large communities such as Birchwood. Birchwood has three Bocce Courts available. Members and their guests can join in on a weekly basis to learn to play. Members will have the opportunity to form a team, join a league, or reserve the court for their own group.
